Robert Street Upgrade

On the 17/09/21 the following photo was taken of the carriageway in front of the ANZ bank where B-Doubles and Road-Trains turn onto the Ardrossan Road enroute to the cereal shipping facility. The surface damage is a result of the high volume of heavy vehicles using the “Street” and made worse by the slewing action of their tri-axle trailer bogeys. Therefore Resurfacing of this Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) highway is imminent. Planning ahead DPTI have approached council to find out if there are any Public Works scheduled for Robert Street in the near future, if so it would be prudent to coordinate any such works with their resurfacing activity.

Prompted by this DPTI enquiry, a town hall “Muppet” recalled the innumerable complaints from residents and street traders about the state of Robert Street. This led to one of the multitude of Plans prepared by our “panel” of exorbitantly paid technical experts to be dragged out, dusted off and the first item activated — “Phone A Friend” who can develop a Concept for a new streetscape. The second item — engage the community to facilitate transparency; implemented by organising a meeting for the 14th of October, attendance by invitation only, through the Progress Association.

According to the YP Country Times 19/10/2021, page 4, the meeting was attended by 9 people 5 of whom were officials. The YPC Operations Manager is quoted as saying “What it stems from is the Plane trees in the mani street have been causing problems, there have been tripping incidents, leaves are making a big mess and they have almost become a liability”. Followed by “This is a chance for the community to come up with a concept for the main street to make it more welcoming and vibrant” — “We want to create a vibrant welcoming community and comfortable friendly spaces” — “We want the plan to connect and enhance the community to businesses, be attractive and be a lasting memory for visitors”. He later indicated this initial meeting was a success with useful feedback”

It was also noted that Council has a launched an online survey, directions are on the Council webpage, or you can access ithe survey directly on WAX Design Robert Street Survey. The survey is open from 21st October to 18th November inclusive.

For those who don’t have internet access hard-copies are available from the council office, or CYP Community Library.

On Friday the 10th December there will be a public meeting, but because of Covid-19 restrictions people will have to register for a 45-minute appointment where they can have their say.

It appears to be the usual exercise in transparency but designed to fail!
